Sounds like he is trying to figure it all out and fit in. Keep in mind, not all things are inspired by Kurt Sutter or any other TV biker hero's. I used to wear fingegrless gloves, but that was before any looneytoons made it the thing to wear. Sweaty hands can have grip issues and full gloves are hotter than fingerless. When it's 100+, it matters to some folks. Some folks wore fingerless gloves at the gym so thier hands didn't get tore up... and that goes back many years. In the south, some folks wear Doo-rags, I started wearing them at work from the heat and was between bikes at the time. I think the company issued them once. I have a denim jacket with patches all over it. I put ONE patch on it, it's Doc's. The rest my wife and kids buy me patches for christmas and not one of them are one I would pick myself... they get a kick out it. It's funny how these things develop. I think a person has to find a balance between safety and comfort as well as what fits with who they are.

Here's an excert from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChapsMotorcycle chaps Motorcycle chaps are an example of the shotgun style. They are usually made of leather with the smooth side out, and generally provide all-around protection for the leg and have side zippers to allow them to be put on easily. They are popular in the biker subculture, providing protection from the wind and cold as well as partial protection from cuts and scrapes in the event of a fall to the roadway.[24] Chaps are also popular in fetish fashion and the leather subculture, where they often are tightly fitted and worn without jeans or other garments layered beneath them other than a codpiece. They can be made of leather, patent leather, or vinyl and are worn for decoration serving no protective purpose. Worn in this manner, they are colloquially referred to as "assless" chaps, despite the redundancy of the term.

An exert from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GloveFingerless gloves: Fingerless gloves or "glovelettes" are garments worn on the hands which resemble regular gloves in most ways, except that the finger columns are half-length and opened, allowing the top-half of the wearer's fingers to be shown. Fingerless gloves are often padded in the palm area, to provide protection to the hand, and the exposed fingers do not interfere with sensation or gripping. In contrast to traditional full gloves, often worn for warmth, fingerless gloves will often have a ventilated back to allow the hands to cool; this is commonly seen in weightlifting gloves. Fingerless gloves are also worn by bikers as a means to better grip the handlebars, as well as by skateboarders and rollerbladers, to protect the palms of the hands and add grip in the event of a fall. Some anglers, particularly fly fishermen, favour fingerless gloves to allow manipulation of line and tackle in cooler conditions. The lack of fabric on the fingertips allows for better use of touchscreens, as on smartphones and tablet computers. Professional MMA fighters are also required to wear fingerless gloves in fights.

Is a bandana considered a "do rag"... Uh oh... I might be a do ragger if it is I wear the half finger gloves on my bicycle - mine have crochet backs to help my sweaty hands breath. The one time I did have a crash my gloves ate it but my palms stayed relativity unscathed - my finger tips got scarfed up though. I got some really good MC riding gloves last summer - molded knuckles and reinforced grip surfaces. To cool my hands off I just put them in the wind for a second and chill. I never understood the chaps thou - I'm thinking of the places you "want" leather - one would be the behind. My leather pants have double thick butt and knees and tuck into my riding boots. No loose edges to get caught and rip open. I've been down on my bicycles a few times and gotten ripped up pretty bad - road rash sux - I do my best to wear the extra safe gear - except when it gets too hot - I can't deal with the heat anymore - I get dizzy and drop my bike - LOL!! As for new riders - being a mentor - by example - I try my best to give good advise but that doesn't mean anybody is going to listen.
You can have it cheap. You can have it fast. You can have high quality. PICK ANY 2....

Just wanted to say I'm just expressing my opinions on a motorcycle forum with others. Not saying my opinions are accurate or correct. And do not let my squed opinion keep you from wearing your fingerless gloves, chaps (pronounced ssshaps) and do rag. My choice of riding gear is equally comical by others.

I keep a hat stashed near by. With an Ultra there are so many easily accessible places to keep it.
