Hey old dawg, sounds like your trip went well.

A couple of folks I work with talked about riding in shorts and flip flops. They argued my jeans would not protect me much better than thier shorts, which in a major slid they may be right. However, I told them their feet would be ground down to stumps if they had to control a blowout... flip flops are crazy.

Flip flops, shorts and tank top is crazy talk man. And if your jeans are greasy slick with oil....they may slide at first before they tear? :icon_flame:

For day rides and longer I wear tourmaster cortech touring pants with kevlar in key places. Jacket is either leather if its for the day or a matching tourmaster cortech jacket with kevlar in key places if its longer then a day. All thats no guarantee but it raises the percentages compared to flip flops, shorts and tank top. I'm telling you 495 and 290 were 70 mph+ parking lots coming out of Boston and heading towards Worcester and these riders were driving like they were cruising Carolina beach or Outer Banks. I would be willing to bet they were new just add water and stir mid life crisis first time riders. If you've ever fell off a motorcycle at even 20-30 mph never mind faster...you know.

I don't even like to go out into the garage in flip flops. I always whack my foot on some thing...
I learned a long time ago, when I tried to move my bike around in the garage wearing sandals and almost lost a toe.
But like you say "to each their own".
I prefer my all leather boots with steel toe and insulation.
I've worn jeans my whole career on my bike, mainly cause the leather makes me overheat and get sick.
I do have a pair of heavy leather touring pants but I can only wear them in the winter, around here... no snow...
I have the standard full grain heavy leather highway jacket that after 18 years is just starting to look broken in. I can wear that in the summer but usually go long sleeve tee shirt or thermal in the sun. I believe in total protection but I overheat and it's just too hard to ride dizzy.
Truthfully- I believe that foot protection is a priority and flip flops are only an accident waiting to happen.

The flip flops in the garage reminds of a lady I used to work with that broke her (arm or leg...can't reember) wearing flip flops in the garage. She was wearing shorts and flip flops, got on her bike and her foot slipped on the damp pavement and down she went. Something similar happening at 70 mph just sounds like a meat grinder.

I need to get better protective gear for summer and winter. I wear steel toe boots most of the time, jeans, shirt, and gloves. In the winter, I layer the clothing and wear a leather jacket and better gloves. In the summer, the leather jacket is too much. I need to do better, I know. All of my bumps and bruises have been offroad (thank God).

As hot as it gets in your neck of the woods in the summer I can't imagine what protective gear you could get that woudn't make the heat worse?

Just got back to town, but wanted to post my 2 cents worth. I never ride ANYWHERE without boots on. Even if it is just a short road test on a repair. The reason, one time I was riding with tennis shoes on and got run into. It ripped my foot off!!! They put it back on but has been a constant problem for the past 30 plus years. I look at riders without proper feet protection and think, "you stupid F" especially when there is a young lady on the back in shorts and sandals. The rest of my gear in warm months consist of just a tee shirt and levis, winter, a heavy leather jacket. My top end is not very well protected, New Mexico is a no helmet state, sort of wish it was. Some riders probably look at me and say the same thing, "you stupid F".

I was in my workshop, it has a painted wooden floor. Summer time in Cali- cheap axxed flip flops on, I just put my FULL cup of coffee on the bench when I bumped or turned and over it went all over the floor. Well I went to step over the mess to get the mop and just caught the edge of the wet and my foot went out from under me... to not fall I guess I kicked the floor with my big toe on my right foot... that was Aug 2011, the toe nail is just now looking like it did in july 2011... I stopped wearing flip flops that day.
I have a pair of leather sandals with a big rubber sole that acts like bumpers on it all the way around. My toes are open but recessed inside this over sized rubber sole. Kinda like safety sandals...LOL
I don't even like going out to get the mail unless I have a real shoe on, I guess once you hurt your foot - its much easier to put the right shoe on instead of not being able to wear one at all.

Yeah D, wtf? If you get your head ripped off where you going to put that hat when BI lets you wear it?
I ride bicycles- now a bicycle helmet is a joke- basically its a scam. I don't wear a bicycle helmet.
My motorcycle helmet on the other hand is a DOT approved skid lid. I say skid lid but some call them brain buckets... I've dropped one on my foot - even in my boots the helmet won. I never leave home with out one. I can't say I don't go topless every now and then but I prefer in my old age to not bump my head anymore.
