MT. Washington auto road is an easy ride. very nice and scenic. There are no 6500' drop offs, the entire mt. is 6500'. The ride is easy, the first I did it back 1975 was on my chopper and above the treeline was a cloud also smoked a doobie at that point. It looks like you had one of the rare days where you could see a 100 miles or so. I got a day like that in 2004, been up that hill a few times and will go again any time I am in the area and it is clear. You had better stay off of Beartooth highway and the autoroad for Pikes Peak, they both have serious dropoffs and the heights are 13,000 to 14,100'. If the dropoffs bothered you make sure you stay off the cog railway, you need a lot of faith in 1800s technology

Sounds like my kind of riding. After a BAD Harley accident in the late 70's, I switched to dirt bikes. When i finally went back on the road again, I had a hard time keeping to blacktop but got tired of replacing lightbulbs on my bike from washboarded gravel roads. Now I stay off dirt completely. I prefer to keep both wheels on the ground now, getting to old for "air".

We Live for winding roads with big drop-offs here. Need to get me a helmet cam. I'll tell you one thing if the speed limit sign says 15mph, 15mph it is. To much debris and road hazards out here to risk it.

No its not an easy ride. Not on an Ultra anyways. There is little room for wrror. Yes the top is 6500 ft but at the tree line break, the drop is about 4200 feet and steadily going up to 6500ft. And for sure if you're a beginner you need not attempt it. Its precariously twisty and windy and low speeds and if you have the misfortune of being behind someone who doesn't know what he/she is doing and has to stop or panics that puts you in a spot too. Luckily it was bikes only, no cars. Cars have to stop on the way down to cool there brakes periodically. The road not only inclines but in placed\s inclines and banks at the same time.

It wasn't the drop that bothered me it was the very little wiggle room for error on either side on the way up. The dirt road the last 1 1/2 miles wasn't cool either. The road in general is just to narrow for what its purpose is.

I've not been up pikes peak but was told that at least the road is average road width.

I love those rides that make memories, hopefully good ones.

I am psyched I made it up and down safely albeit spooked.

Had a few of those...
coming off the I-90 highway ramp near troy, used heavily by large gravel trucks, there was a oil/hydraulic fluid spill that I saw last second and managed to only hit part of with my front wheel just as i committed to the turn (still doing almost 40 mph to make the green light) and with every rotation of the tire for about 5 inches the tire would slip out and then catch as I 'almost out of control' went right for the concrete abutment.
One of those "spooked" moments... still here and smiling and happy I kept cool and didn't do anything stupid. Those are the ones that make you a good rider or kill ya.
The ride up that road... since it didn't kill ya, only made ya stronger/better. Enjoy the time ya got there are no guarantees.

Didn't kill me and I've learned never to intentionally place myself in harms way again.

And that was a cool I-90 story. I'm very familiar with the area. Use to pop in to the Berwick,NY HD shop before it was cynder blocks, fusha and foo chrome. I was visualizing that happening as you descriped the experience. And you said it best...kept cool and didn't do anything stupid. I got a million of those riding experiences/stories where all you can do is nothing and hope for the best. Its all in the bounce of the ball,bail of hay,bounding deer etc... so to speak in my experience.
