Has anyone done the conversion fron a 2000 swingarm to a 2002-2007 swingarm. What has to be done to upgrade to something that won't break. Been through 3 swingarms and getting tired, thanks, DEERSLAYER

They have broken right in front of the axel on the left side, top first. The swingarm was poorly designed, with the 2002 they built it like they should of in the first place. I am hard on a bike I only believe in WFO, so 2nd and 3rd gear shifts are a little traumatic to the swingarm, plus the bike has 184,700 miles on it, broke the first one in 01, replaced by warenty the next was 09 and then yesterday. I saw a line on the paint and thought it might be a crack, then I had met a 103" streetglide that thought he could beat a little 88", oh well showed him wrong but when I got home found the line is now a break. I might get this one welded with a plate put on the top, have to talk to my welder. Will be rideing today, just taking it easy, will be rideing with a stock 2000 fatboy down to the Cape and I won't have to use much power rideing with him. I broke them in the past with stock HP now I have 88.5 and 102 torque and that seems to accelrate the problem

Sounds like its time to upgrade,don't necessarily have to buy new.

Wow, I've never known anyone to crack a swingarm. I remember broken chrome-moly frames, but that was a heat relieve problem. Usually the belt/chain is the weaker part, sometimes the clutch/plates.

I was wondering if you were a pro-am drag racer. Short bursts of full-on acceleration over a longer distance. Most hot-shoes run stoplight to stoplight and then only through a few gears. I have my moments, but I drag warning nipples, not ruin drive-line components.

I also wondered if the part of the problem was something off-center. Like the engine was crooked in the frame, or the frame was tweaked somewhere. That might put more of a load on a small, singular area.

I hope you find the problem. Summer is coming, in some parts of the USA it's already here!

You are the first I have heard that broke a swing arm. From 2000 to 2002 are the frames the same if they are you should have no problem making the change, it might be very costly tho. I think that you will do better by welding your old swingarm and beef it up with some plates like you said. I have had a lot of good luck by calling the factory tech people. They usually are very helpful and have a better handle on what can fit. It's a phone call may take a few minute to get through but you have nothing to loose.

the 2000-2001 swingarm is the weakpoint, I have broken belts, like 2 in 184,000 miles and replaced 2 before they broke. Other people I know that had the same swingarm have also have broken them. I tend to be rough on the bike with 2nd and 3rd gear shifts. In 2002 instead of using the square tubing the swingarm is made of, they but in a forged piece for the last 5" or so instead of the tubing, this has taken care of the problem. Before the only forged piece was past the axel where the shock mounts to the swingarm. I have found out everthing I have to do to retrofit it to a pre 2002 frame, I will checked tommorow with my welder and see if he wants to plate it. That is what we use to do on shovels when we used struts for drag raceing. I also have a promod shovelhead dragbike with a drag frame that is chromemoly and that cracks but that is expected, due to the use that it gets. Thanks everyone I know what I need to do the job either way.

Now that you mention it, the custom-catalog swingarm in my big bike is also heavier square tubing, and it has a gusset welded over the pivot.

(I have a bad picture at the bottom that was taken not to show the swingarm, but the new Progressive shocks. I think you can see what you have to see.)

After my bike was modified I had things like the rear wheel and the round swingarm left over. My UPS driver's dad had been hit from behind the autumn before, and I just gave him the parts. I knew it was round, because I showed him.

However, my Dyna was built in 2003, titled as an '04. In other words, was MoCo still using that design when I bought mine? Ya' know, I replace it out of dumb luck and my lust for chrome...

Edit: If you look under the right rear folded foot-peg you can see a weld bead. That's the extra layer of steel for the gusset.
