Hello, I am new to the forum and own my first HD. Always ran oem motor oil. Setting on service mileage now and trying to decide which motor oil to use. Have replaced the 6 speed tranny oil with Spectra Platinum 75w 140w for six speeds and made 5th and 6th gears much much quieter. I have researched on line but every brand says they are the best so I would appreciate riders perspective even though it is very subjective.

There are several oils that are produced for v twins. I use Mobile 1 synthetic for v twins. However this is a debate that will go on for a long time on what oils to use. My feeling is that all oils will work fine as long as you change it at the right interval.

I agree! my main interest is to hear from riders with over 100k. I am coming from a water cooled metric (9rs and 84k) which must have less temperature fluctuation which got me to thinking. Thanks for sharing your brand. My first oil change is coming up soon and I want to take the best care I can of mine and my wife's softail customs which we plan to keep indefinitely. I am not a brand enthusiast but my '07 fxstc is the finest machine that I have ever ridden and made in the U.S.A. Old school just like me.

Hopper, I would analyze the type of riding that you do. If you are doing stop and go, red light to red light stuff, synthetic oil all the way. If you are doing a lot of steady cruising on highways, regular Dino can do the job just fine, just keep it changed. The synthetics keep the air cooled motor about 10-15 degrees cooler IIRC. Their viscosity is better as well. I run Amsoil and have never had an oil related failure with it, but neither have I ever had one running Dino either. I have torn into motors that have used each and there's a distinct difference in the deposits inside, with the synthetic being much cleaner. Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobile 1, all are excellent choices but a guaranteed heated debate among motorcyclists.

Over the 35+ years of riding HD I have vasilated between OEM and after market parts,oil and shops. From here on out I am a died in the wool OEM guy for shops, parts and oil. I have had bad experiences with aftermarket shops and parts so I am a stoned OEM rider.

Currently I have 3 bikes. One I use HD SE Syntech and the other 2 HD oil..reg heavy. Its not apples and oranges as some think. HD stuff tends to be more expensive because its worth it. Don't let cost dictate your decision. You truly do get what you pay for.

Thank all of you for the info and good ideas to consider. Wife's bike goes in next week for the 10,000 mile maintenance and new Dunlop rubber. Have until then to decide......
