What do you two wheelers think of Trikes? Do you have a problem riding with them and do you have any rules when riding in a group with riders on trikes?

Other than a single custom Harley 45 trike one of our choirboys had in the in early 1970s, I have never ridden in a group with a trike. I have never driven a trike, myself.

As for Harley's Geezer trike, I have absolutely no interest. To be fair, it's not that this model is a trike, per se. I will never, never drive their traditional garbage wagons, and a trike is worse. If I need a GPS, a stereo better than in my home, glass to isolate me from the wind and umphtenine saddlebags to carry my house with me, I'll quit riding. And--at first intriguing--a Can-Am is starting to look worse to me yet.

Having said that, these sport custom trikes look like fun. Custom coach builders now even offer a trike kit for Sportsters. My wife has expressed renewed interest to ride again now that her knee has been repaired, and I would consider a sport kit on Betty to hasten that. I have Spinner, after all.

If you can't ride a two wheeler then get yourself a trike. Get out and enjoy life! I don't have a problem with someone riding a trike, just stay in your lane and follow common sense of the road. Last thing that you want to do is have a mishap with one of your riding buddies. Main thing is get out there and enjoy.

The trouble with the modern trike is that it just is a traditional motorcycle with an added wheel. While I commend Can-Am for innovation, that rendition is more car than bike. The trike just doesn't seem to be an integrated design, just an added on modification.

There's plenty of blame to go around. MoCo wants to sell what it has--forever. And for the guys who want Harley trikes, most are trying to extend their participation in cycling due to age or injuries. Not a bad goal, just odd.

I do believe that the newer trikes with rear wheels that cant on turns is the right idea. And even MoCo is now building front ends with more rake and trail. But the idea is not yet fully formed, and the trikes steer like wheelbarrows. It's an idea that needs a few more years of design R/D.

I agree with your overall sentiment. I'll ride with dedicated guys no matter what brand they choose. I've owned Gold Wings, myself.

Having said that, I do not believe the spirit and the intent of the "trike concept" is being met. The bikes don't handle, they are over-weight, and come equipped with stop-gap R/D so that MoCo has something to sell. That is not the fault of the owners and riders.

MoCo just wants to sell them, probably because the profit margin is great. You'll notice that when their trikes appeared their sidecars disappeared.

I agree too. The nature of the beast is that it does not handle whether it is a trike or a two wheeler with a side hack.. Until there is a company that fells that it is will make them money to change the geometry of the three wheeler then people that want them will have to deal with the handling issue. I personally have some friends that are thinking about a trike for one reason or another and I think that it is great if it makes them happy. The world and life for some people is not easy and any way someone can enjoy it I am all for it!

Lenny, the thought that is driving the trike craze can be summed up with the phrase, "Some 'boomers have bad knees." That's a lousy way to R/D and market a product. A trike then becomes little more than a "chrome crutch."

I've seen bikes built with essentially a 'front swingarm.' With a proper pumpkin and a suspension that allows the rider to lean, a trike could be a fantastic addition to our sport. What we get is yet another Electra-Glide-ish garbage wagon, this one with an outrigger third wheel.

I agree, but until there is a big enough market for a real handling three wheeler unfortunately we are stuck with what is on the market. They do exist but they are not harley's.
