I utilize both approaches. Betty has the super-tuner while Spinner uses the packaged program from Harley. And both bikes run great. Power, no flat spots, and they pull away cleanly from stops.
However, I believe both bikes needed the differing approaches. Spinner has a standard, modern, rubber 1200cc Sportster engine. We did the simple stuff. Pipes and air filtration. This winter, an oil cooler. My wrench got the correct download from MoCo and installed it.
Betty's engine. on the other hand, is extensively modified--and not all within the same year. I picked out performance options that pertained to me, not Peter Fonda. She saw the dyno twice. The 95-inch kit alone was installed the first year using standard synth oil changes until 6K miles of break-in. Then the fun began! And with those necessary miles the dyno tuning didn't stress the engine components.
I happy with what I did and it has paid benefits. I believe that my last peeve--Spinner's heat--will be lessened by the oil cooler. My overall advice is still build a bike for yourself and you alone, use good parts and talk to your wrench.
