You describe the oil as "black." By that do you mean "clean" or implying it's "dirty"? I mean, black leather is new, and some new oil is green.

The reason I ask is that some guys don't change out their oil filters regularly. I do mine every time I change oil. Additionally, while some filters claim to be a direct replacement, they are not.

You don't think this could be as simple a problem as a plugged filter, do you?

Hi, Well by black oil I meant old, & so the thought of a nasty filter also crossed my mind, but sadly I can tell you that it not case now, as I've just done a oil & filter change. So as you can imagine I cracked her up with high hopes, but the symptoms still remain.
Kinda getting a little ragged of now, as I have a ripped musle in my right arm, & have a severely sprained wrist. Trouble is i'm not a lefty.
I have ordered a manual, & a pressure gauge, not that I know what the pressure should be when I get it.
I have a sporty, (clymer) book here, but only upto 85, & think I they only did the xlh in 89. In any case, it dosen't seem to give oil pressures, unless I aint looked hard enough.

Found a helpfull harley dealer though who gave me some ideas to try, but I have done all those & I can't start pump extraction in my present state,which was my next plan. In any case he reckons he has never known one go.

Think maybe it will be off to see them, for a checkup, even if it's just a diagnostic.

Sad to hear that you have a bad wing. Might be your best bet to take it to the dealer for a diagnostic. Oil pump in a sporty is not a hard thing to deal with. I have never done it but it is under the engine and is taken out by unscrewing a couple of bolts. The other thing that could cause the problem is the gear that runs the pump. That is more difficult to deal with as it runs off the cams. If you have to go that route there are buell parts that should work in your engine that are more stout.

as much as i hate to suggest this, it might be a good time to take it to the shop. with your bad wing and the fact that this is a wierd deal. I might just suck it up and let them fix it. if it comes back with black tape over the light, you know you took it to the wrong place!!

That would be a sad story, I would put a stop on the check real fast!

Yeah, as you say might just be time to suck it up. Never had to take a vehicle to a repair man in my life, but time, work, etc & only so many hours in the etc etc.

Hey, today I did what I should have done over the winter. I told my wrench to order an oil cooler for Spinner, and to also see what oil pressure gauges are compatible with a 2010 "48."

As much as I love the new Sportsters, this heat issue is bothering me. Now hearing your story, I don't plan on chasing gremlins or fragging a motor that runs great.

Well, it may be a good idea, In my case I think (hope) it could be nothing, as Istill have a good feed upto the filter, but untill I get a gauge, or check, it may as well be garden display !
Anyhoo, engines are supposed to run on levers, pipes, & steam whistles, not microchips from zarcon industries.
Sure wish I had a gauge now though !. I've got one coming over from your end, 1/3 of the price of over here. But hey, at least we don't get taxed too heavily on fuel over here, it only works out at a little short of $10, a gallon

In speaking with my mechanic and my parts guy yesterday, they weren't even sure Harley makes an oil gauge for modern Sportsters. In fact, I don't remember seeing one.

There must be a secondary supplier who makes them, but then, I don't remember seeing a model like that, either. There has to be somebody. Guys drag race Sportsters, guys tour on Sportsters, and the newer vintage has been around for a while now. I can't be the only one who distrusts idiot lights.

Edit: Hey, guess what. There is a supplier. Now, do any of this forum's banner advertisers offer a product similar to this? I'd like to suupport those guys.
