I have 03 ultra classic 88" that I just installed a set of V&H slip ons and a VO2 air cleaner. The bike sounds like it runs back and forth from one cylinder to two cylinders only at ideal. Took to harley shop to check codes. No codes. Removed the DoBeck fuelmanagement system and down loaded a Stage 1 from Harley. The shop could not figure it out after a few test rides and checking over a few items. They want me to bring back and leave it for a couple days so they can talk to Harley for help. Anyone have any feed back?

S&S 510 cams
Fueling oil pump
V&H twin slash slip ons

At this point, I'd suggest that you let the guys at the shop fix you up. One thing - once they figure it out you'll probably be fixed for a while.

You can have it cheap.
You can have it fast.
You can have high quality.

I don't know if that model has a heat management system...maybe only the newer models. Anyway, I had a similar issue on my softtail convertible and it was the heat management system kicking in. It should have kicked out above idle but didn't so I disabled it and all was well. Good luck!

Do modern bikes have a "learning curve" for their CPUs like the first chips for go-fast Mustangs?

I ask the question because I got Screaming Beagle pipes, a Stage I air filtration system and a factory download this winter. For about 5 or 6 start-ups she coughed a few times when warming up. Then less and less, and now not at all.

Sometimes when hot and then re-started, the engine races for a second, like the throttle is part open. Not all of the time, and perhaps once this week.

The bike appears to be 'learning.' I remember reading that when Paxton blowers were installed on Mustangs, sometimes they wouldn't even stay running. Then they ran rough. Then suddenly they smoothed out. Could that be the problem here?

if the boys at the shop want it i would drop it off. it is still stock and i am sure they can sort it out. just ask them how much it will cost first! I have a power commander on my 03 ultra, and it smothed things out just fine. i did have to play with a few downloads. it was wierd working on a harley with a laptop, but what the hell, just rolling with the times.

+1
Making sure you know the cost first is very important with any shop.

"Laptop", I got to admit, any time I think of getting a newer bike the whole "electronic" thing keeps me away. My '94 still runs like a scared rabbit even if it has a few short comings... 5 speeds, 80 cubes, but a screwdriver makes it work...

If the shop costs too much get the shop manual, it is the same book the pro wrench uses and if you can read and understand the lingo, you have a good shot at fixing it yourself, providing you have the "Laptop".
