On my 92 Softtail, I've had an ongoing problem with the starter. When the voltage gets belowe 12.5 approx, the solenoid just clicks, add voltage and it starts right up. I pulled the solenoid apart and cleaned the plunger and contacts, this helped, but then the problem came back. All grounds are clean, new battery, positive connections are fine, and in the recent past, I replaced the stator and voltage regulator. I see in a parts catalog, rebuild kits available for the solenoid. Is this where my problem is or do I need to look elsewhere?

How old is your battery? I think that the battery should be at least 12.5 minimum for it to crank the starter. Somebody else out there comment on this.

The battery is brand new, Interstate glass mat. If the bike sets for a while, like when there is 4 inches of snow on the ground, it looses voltage, and that is when the problem shows up. I just bought a battery tender for it. I also just ordered a solenoid kit for it. Hope this takes care of the problem.

I see what is going on here. There is a open circuit on you bike. When you let it set it drains the battery. It could be coming from your starter, or somewhere else. Make sure that all your wires are wrapped in insulation. If you installed any new electrical things like lights or auxlury plugs look there. This is a difficult thing to find. A battery tender is always a good thing to use on a bike. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Have same problem with my 2008 Sportster I am guessing that the security system works all the time hence batt. problem. Starter working against 10 to 1 compresion is a heavy lift.
