If the clutch is pulled in all the way, and the engine still pulls a small amount, or is resisting being walked more than in neutral, do I have a clutch problem? The friction zone is felt most when starting while in first or walking with the clutch pulled all the way.

Couple of things. Do you have a shop manual?
Did you go thru those steps of adjustment?
If so, does your bike have a 'spring plate' in the clutch pacK?
It is not uncommon that the brass rivets in the plate start to let go and cause havoc with adjustments.
Usually around 60K a spring plate will start to loosen up.

Try this:
make sure the cable isn't hanging up, lube it, if its stiff after lubing you may have a frayed one. needs 2 b replaced if frayed.
Check the cable adjustments make sure they haven't loosened up.
Manual has it all. I bought mine 16 years ago.

So when you ask about the clutch drap 'a small amount'.
The steels are spinning with the clutch hub which is attached by chain to engine.
The frictions are attached to the tran shaft.
So when the tran shaft is in neutral it is spinning with the engine, but no drag is evident since no power is put on the output shaft.
When put in gear, any out of round in any of the 6 or so frictions or steels can cause some drag. Even the oil in the primary will create some additional drag.
Are you asking because the drag is getting noticably worse or 'just asking'?

Thanks all. I am waiting on an owner's manual. I didn't notice the drag at all at first. Within 50-75 miles I started noticing it when starting the engine in first gear. 2005 with 15,500 mi., 1449cc.
The feel would be more like MKE FE describes with an out of round plate. First trip to the mechanic.

Not enough miles for the spring plate to be a factor. Heck for a 2005 I don't know if the motor company even uses them any longer. Sounds like it is a bit out of adjustment. I would play around with it - after you get the manual - and save some cash instead of having a 18 year old kid at the dealer give it his best shot. Is your mechanic a trusted bud or the dealer?

Thanks MKE FE, I like "Sounds like it is a bit out of adjustment" better. The mechanic is a neighborhood independent servicing both metric and American.

not much different that bicycle cables, except much heavier duty, easy to adjust though.
