Hello from chilly Minnesota.

I have a 30 year old Honda Goldwing. It's a nice enough bike but my wife suggested that I get a "bagger" and give the wing to my son. I used to own an old 1980 Electra-glide (AMF shovelhead) and a 1990s era Fat Boy. Unfortunately, at those times in my life I was not able to ride much. Now I can. So I am looking around for a road bike. I am planning a Route 66 trip next summer. I am trying to find my way through the naming conventions (Electra-glide vs Ultra vs Classic, etc). I would love to find a document that explains the differences in the models.

I have set a budget in the $10k-$12k range. So I figure I am looking at early 2000s with 10,000-50,000 miles on them.

Are there any years back then that a guy should watch out for? Looking at the web, it seems like the 2003 models have a problem with the electrical going out in mid ride for no apparent reason. The 2007 seem to suffer from a heat issue, from what I can find. A friend said that the 2000-2001 had problems with cam bearings. Any others that I should be aware of?

There's not a whole lot of riding season left (it was 48 riding to work this morning), but I figure, in the spring, they will cost more.

Well, I wound up buying a 2005 Electraglide Classic with 16k miles. It is bone stock except for a seat backrest. It is Dark Cherry in color.

That's a nice bike my friend has the same bike and loves it. Good luck with it and ride safe.
