hi how are you all hope all is well.
i have a 2001 883XLH sportster i had the bike for only 6 months it has 7100 miles on it. i don't know if this is normal or what. it does not do it all the time. sometimes as i release the clutch slowly in first gear it sounds like it spins then grabs and that is when i hear the clunk but i learned to use the clutch so it does not happen but every now and then i hear it like it spins and grabs with a clunk other wise the after first gear its fine. talked to a few of my buddies that had sporsters and they tell me its normal on some of them i do not know if that's so. i hope someone can tell me what it may be if its not normal. i adjusted the clutch the proper way the shop manual says to. thanks for your time and help.

I had a sporty myself but of the older variety. The problems could result from using synthetic oil in the primary. You might want to use the primary oil that Harley offers for the primary. I don't know about the clunk but you might want to take the durby cover off and do a visual that the oil is not at an overflow level. You should not over fill the primary. I think that it is 29 to 32oz and not any more. But check the specs on it as this is just off the top of my head.

The synthetic oil could make it slip. It did that in my sporty.

Let us know if this helps.

ok an thank you for your time and help. i just changed the primary oil with valvoline 20-50 made for wet clutches the shop manual tells you to use regular oil thats made for motor cycles not synthetic i don't use synthetic oil i use regular oil made for motor cycles and that is what i put in the primary. same as the engine oil 2/1/2 quarts in the engine and 32oz in the primary. again thank you for your time.
