Can't disagree with his Sporters comment. I feel about the same about every body's bike but mine..............

I've always changed my own oil and I always use synthetic. Just like Roadkinging says - it gives me time to get up and personal with my bike. I used 10W-40 on my old bike, but I haven't checked to see the recommended weight for the FLHTK (just bought it a few weeks ago). That will give me another excuse to open the owners manual to do some more reading.
Hey Roadking - I'll be sure to look you up next time I head to Oregon City for an oil change. The first round is on me.

Oil the heart blood of your engine. I use Mobil One in everything but the primary. I use the Harley Synthetic in the primary. The only reason I use it is because I don't want to take a chance on hurting my stator. Any body know what is the difference between the Regular Mobil One and the V Twin Mobil One?

I don't think an extended warranty covers the cost of oil changes ... just limited warranty work. And yes doing your own oil changes is best ... No one can do it better than an owner ... May take longer ... but I've never seen an owner make a minor mistake and not correct it right away ... I changed the oil on my Ultra for the winter sleep back in Dec. It was my first time with a Harley. Well the manual called for X amount , so in it goes to the milliliter ... But it was too high on the dip stick when I checked ... So I re-read how much, only this time read where it says to check a 3rd of a quart short and fill to proper amount. I drained all the oil and did it again ... right this time ... always read all the instructions when doing something for the first time

I always changed my own oil. I use Amsoil 20-50 Sythentic. Every 3,000 miles, like clockwork. I actually have three quarts sitting on my tool chest waiting for my next change which is coming up quickly.

I used to change my own oil. Now I just go to the shop.

As I've told some of you, my area does not make collection easy. We used to have an oil recycling barrel right on the main street next to a gas station. When that stopped, I heard we had one at our local "recycling center." We used to call that 'the dump.' Never found it.

After that, those quickie change places stopped accepting client oil fearing that there would be paint thinner mixed in with the oil. Finally I just stopped playing scavenger hunt with gallon water jugs full of scrap oil and let my wrench do it. When I switched over to synth I simply rotated my changes to tune up time.

Over the past few years that's been perfect. Betty had a major tune up, and Spinner has been in for her 1K, 5K and 10K already. At our shop, those protocols come with an oil change, anyway.

I thought recycling was to be so hep and modern age. Not here.
