All of that rt 7 was unique and relaxing. Great road with a nice mixture of rural 55-60 mph and thru towns at 30 mph. I couldn't help buut to think of Alice's restaurant and James Taylor when I was going thru the Berkshires, Great Barrington and Stockbridge, Mass area.
The Connecticut part of rt 7 was surprising very scenic and rolling curves and stream side views taken us the some National park and whose name escapes me.
Jumping on I-84 snaps you back into reality immediately, lol. Night and day, lol. It took 6+ hours to run the back way on rt7 from my hometown to I-84 east and got back home via the expressway in 1/2 the time. I preferred the casual and scenic back roads to the hectic high speed mayhem of the interstates.
I've taken RT 7 thru the Berkshires. Long time ago but the parts I remember were really nice and very peaceful. Some of those antique shops along the way were pretty interesting places. Luckily i was on my bike and could only look, cause I really wanted to buy an old diving helmet for my brother but had no way of getting it home. Yeah I went through there in the late summer, stopped at some small diner and some of the best pie I can remember. Old woman made them, I was lucky cause that was one of the days she did it. Bet that place has been paved over twice by now. Nice trip down memory lane.
The I-84 and reality are the conditions out here. I have a 20 mile trip to get out of town then it quiets down a little, but nothing like RT 7.

I miss all the streams, lakes and ponds. Used to be we'd find a nice quiet place next to the lake or stream and pop off the boots and soak our feet. One time I was just so dam hot that after I got out of my boots I wadded in up to my thighs... nothing cools you off like wet pants in the wind...
Have you rode up through the redwood forest?
I used to go to Sequoia National Forest, Kings Canyon and Generals Highway almost every year. It's about 400 miles one way. Beautiful country side, and yes I did find a small stream and stopped, took off my boots and socks and soaked my feet while I smoked a stogie to keep the black flies away. I'd love to get up there again, soon I hope.
I would recommend it to all that travel out this way.
I have pics in my photo album from the trips I've taken up there.
Look closely at the bottom of the tree - that little spec is my bike.
Here's my usual campsite
