Palomar Observatory is well known, we read about it in grade school the '60's when America was on it's way to the moon. I've been up there once before but not for about 12 years. What a ride, I purposely left late to miss all the ricky racers that use the Cork-Screw for a race track. As I turned up the mountain road I saw fire trucks, an ambulance, and 6 hi way patrol cars. As I rolled past an accident scene I saw a tarp on the ground with someone covered, a bunch of debris on the ground and what looked to be what was left of a motorcycle (Ninja or Hyabusa) and a small car with the front missing. My heart broke, and I shed some tears for what looked to be someone that wasn't going home that day. I was going to do a U-turn and head home with a heavy heart, knowing I almost lost my brother on this very same road too. Something inside me said I owed it to all that ride to get to the top of this mountain just to say F - U to the evil spirits that inhabit that place. The farther I went up the more I felt I had to get there. It's a technical ride and not for the faint of heart.

My heart and prayers go out to the rider that never made it home that day. RIP.

Looks like a fun ride

Thanks for sharing... awesome looking place. The area looks like cool riding grounds.

Yeah it is!! - Sadly the whole way up and most of the day I couldn't get that wreck out of my mind. It was hard to enjoy the ride, even though it was kick ass. Vistas and pretty spectacular overlooks for most of the ride, helped to clear my mind here and there. But - Something like that is hard to get out of your head - I was riding alone and my mind was wandering, it left an impression on me for the rest of the day.
I was pretty happy when I reached to Observatory - and - for a short time felt like a kid roaming around the grounds and inside the building. I kept thinking about having to paint that place, probably be a blast. The white wash stucco really stands out, I was on a ride coming back from Borrego Springs and I saw the Observatory from many miles away, maybe 10 or so, up on the top of the mountain. That was when i decided I wanted to check it out.



My Pleasure - I'm including the trip map I used to plan it out - Door to door 268 miles. The region is some really good riding and the roads are pretty nice and some are fairly new pavement.

I was having a blast passing the casino buses up the hills - they were going 35 in a 55, I'd punch it in 3rd and I felt like I was on a rocket ship - smile time.

I'll feed ya some BBQ at the homestead and your choice of any soft drink - I remembered.
I'm thinking a nice Sirloin with the rub anyway you like it - I take mine seared on the outside & red in the middle.

The accident scene I saw was the remnants of a head on collision. The Echo was missing it's front end and there was debris everywhere in front of the camp ground driveway. The bike was a ways away from the tarp. Really grizzly. I didn't look too hard and saw that much... Like I said it left a mark on me.

I needed some closure...
