Yeah the heritage would still keep you in the touring game to a point. And the seat height is 2 inchs lower than the Ultra. How is the ride on the softails I wonder?
I think spoke wheels are a plus personally. I always preferred those if given a choice...nostalgia I guess.
For me, the stock riding position was perfect. My upper legs were parallel to the road, the handle bars were at the right position, and the stock seat was comfortable. I had the 2003 model and when purchased it (used) the only mod's that I recall was a stage 1 kit with Vance and Hines longshots. I was happy with the overall performance and handling of the bike. The center of gravity seems lower on the Heritage the other models. I lost my footing once and layed it over at a gas station. It wasn't hard to get it back up.
In my opinion, the Heritage is a good bike. It's not too heavy for around town riding and its comfortable enough to ride across the country. I put a lot of miles on my old Heritage and for a time it was my only means of transportation, so I am a little biased. You have done a lot of miles on your Ultra's.... you may not care for the Heritage after feeling the comfort of an Ultra. A friend of mine barrowed my Heritage once and bitched about how uncomfortable the seat was. He is into the FLH's.
I like the spokes. I just don't like not being able to plug a tire if it get's a flat.
