Hi, My 97 FXD has a tacho problem. It didn't work when I bought it. Its only coverered 18000 miles. I rode her 150 miles home and the tacho didn't work once. Well, I had to leave her outside in a storm one night, and next morning when I fired her up, the tacho worked. It worked for about 5 minutes. Then for the next few days it worked when fired up from cold very briefy . Its gone back to not working at all now !Any one out there got any ideas or solution to this, I'd like a rev counter. I was wondering if it could be a bad earth ?

sounds like something got wet and worked - that would lead me to believe that you have a bad electrical connection somewhere in the tacho circuit. I'd start by seeing which connections can get wet and cleaning them completely until shiny.

This may be a silly question but my 1998 fxd dyna doesn't have a tacho only a speedo,I have been told that the speedo acts as a tacho at tickover, mine doesn't so any info on this please? Thanx. Rod

My bike doesn't have a tach, only a speedo. I've only had the rev limiter kick in once and that was when I first got the bike. I've learned to listen for shift points and sometimes when riding with other bikes that drown out my bike's sound I have a hard time hitting the shift right. I guess I could just look at the speedo and shift at speed points but sometimes I don't know which gear it's in and then it wouldn't work.

Yeah, like you I listen for shift points also RK,probably the best way to go I reckon,can be awkward in heavy traffic though with much noise.
