wondering how many of us change our own oil.... got a friend who told me i should get an extended service warranty... i asked why and he said so i would never have to change my own oil again !
wow...uhmm... i dont want anyone else changing my oil. its like a chance for me to get close to my bike and bond...haha. well at least i know what i put in, what i take out, and shes getting the care she needs, from someone who really cares. ok fine.... i just enjoy doing some of the lighter routine maintenance myself. and if i can get a friend over who needs his bike oil changed... dude..!, lets pop the top on a cold one, turn on some tunes, put on some sunglasses, get into the sun and that is a very good day, which always ends in a ride. damn long time till spring with winter still a month away.

roadkinging, Is that you, you look like you are right out of a easy rider movie!HaHa Back to the question, I change my own oil, as I feel the same as you do. My thoughts are if you don't mod them up too much they will run forever. I just had a friend of mine get his engine rebuilt from the factory and r&r for under $3k, it had 176K miles on it.

On something as crucial as oil, I change it myself. It's pretty easy to do and I know that it's done right.

I've always done all the maintence work on my bike, especially the regular scheduled oil, air requirements.......If done right it's a money saver..........doesn't take that long either, jus put aside some time and make sure you follow all the guidelines printed out in your Owner's Manual. Location of the oil filter on Harley's is the most difficult to get at , but with the proper tools, it's a snap, just make sure you dispose of the oil and filter in the right place.

hey hogrider
i can put my used motor oil in a empty milk jug and my garbage service will pick it up for recycling... but there is no recycling of my oil filter so i just put in a zip lock style bag and throw in garbage can.... what kinda service do you have for the oil filter?
hey rip
you asked what type of oil but never told us what you use... SO....hope you answer your own question. as for me ..... i switched to a synthetic oil after brake in miles. brand....AMSOIL motorcycle oil 20w-50. but i dont think there is that much difference between brands but a huge difference between types of oil these days. with a choice of dinosaurs juice (fossil fuels), or synthetic oil the performance difference is huge. viscosity brake down seems to come from heat and friction so i also installed an oil cooler which took longer to order and pickup from local harley dealer then it took to install with a friend and a couple of cold ones in hand.

I have his answer : Contrary to popular opinion, I am not an expert on absolutely everything. I know, it's hard to believe, but sadly, it's true. Maybe you should ask someone who gives a rat's ass what happens to a Sportster.
