Earlier this summer I purchased new Dunlop front and rear tires for my Street Glide at 13,400 miles. The original tires probably had approximately 1,000 miles remaining tread, but my wife and I were planning an 1,800 mile trip to Michigan. I checked with my local HD shop and was quoted $672.80 plus tax for tires, mount, and balance. I then checked with the local Honda/Yamaha shop and purchased the same Dunlop tires and the total bill came to $492. Sometimes it pays to shop around.

Great bit of advice! I think that it always pays to shop around. Better to keep that extra money for gas and partial payment on your next set of tires.

I can't remember what I paid for my tires. I shopped around and my dealer beat J&P by ten bucks.
The install was 118. The whole thing was under 500. Your dealer wanting 672 that's straight up capitalism at it's finest!
You should post an online review and let your townies know what's up. That could help bring their prices down.

I had the harley dealer change my back tire once... they made the tranny leak and then told me they could fix the leak for $1,500 - so I guess that would be even more expensive than your dealer

I order my tires off the internet - no tax - free shipping... $225 for both tires.
I take the wheels off myself - no one touches my bike but me -
I bring my wheels and new tires to the wheel works shop - 60 bucks gets them mounted and spin balanced.
I bring the wheels w/new tires back home - polish them up really nice - clean the inside of the fenders - check the brakes, do any maintenance - then put the wheels back on the bike.
Takes me one full day - I sleep real well at night knowing the job was done right.
Sometimes its more than what it costs - its the way the job gets done.
I enjoy working on my bike - and I love riding it knowing that I did my best.
For what the dealer costs you can go out and buy a nice lift/jack - the shop manual - any tools you might need and even some cold beverages - kick back and get 'er done.

Weljo2001 - I checked the link you provided and found the Honda/Yamaha dealer where I bought my tires is a preferred installer. The next time I need tires I will check into ordering on-line and having them shipped to the shop. Thanks for the tip!

Your Welcome, It makes it so much easier to just show up and have the tires already there to be put on. It easy for me to strap a couple of tires on my bike but for alot of guys its not.

RK - Good news! I have been following your thread about the Road King repairs. Sad to say that I am no where near to being "mechanically inclined" enough to attempt a home repair of that magnitude. Our trip is getting closer, as we will be pointing the bikes west in a couple of weeks.

After some extensive research and a little learning curve I have all the parts ordered on their way here now. I'm thinking a day or two to get everything cleaned up and put back together after those parts get here. Do some local test rides to break it back in & after that I'll be getting ready to take a trip. I will keep you posted - check out my thread on the repairs I'm doing a video - maybe it will help someone.
