Product Review: Eye Of Mine Eye-View 1080HD Eyewear Video Sunglasses

The Eye Of Mine Eye-View 1080HD Eyewear Video Sunglasses are a pretty cool device that lets you easily capture video hands free. The product is well made and works as advertised. These video sunglasses come with a pair of clear interchangeable polarized lenses, a cleaning cloth, a sturdy protective case, a set of elevated slip on temples – used to change the angle of the glasses in relationship to the users head, USB cable, batteries and wall charger. Charge them up and go out and film. Operation is a simple ONE-BUTTON on/off switch.

The glasses work by way of a camera mounted in the frame above and between the wearer’s eyes. What ever the user looks at the video captures. 1080 HD is crystal clear and is high enough quality that single frames can be used for still shots. Video is recorded to micro SD/SDHC memory cards. A Mini USB 2.0 port on the sunglasses lets you charge the built-in 500mAh lithium-polymer battery. The eyewear features two video resolutions with different viewing angles, letting you capture 1080p video at 30 fps with a viewing angle of 135°, or 720p video at 60 fps with a wide 170° viewing angle.

Eye-View 1080HD Eyewear Video Sunglasses use a control file that you edit and load into the camera via USB connected computer.. With controls over image settings such as exposure, white balance, contrast, sharpness, and audio volume, one can also switch between 50 or 60Hz light frequency settings. The settings are all stored and edited using a 'eyeofmine_Setting.txt' file on the micro SD card.

Glasses have a built in mono microphone, battery with a 1-hour life, and great styling that looks good and holds tight to the users head during activity.

The manual is an easy read – and once you understand how easy these action camera glasses are to use, you’ll be recording all those activities that used to be too difficult to film with a standard video camera.

Actual Usage:
I got the glasses and read the instructions end to end while they charged. After about an hour of charging they were ready to use. The glasses are pre-set to the most common settings. It was fairly straightforward how to use the settings file and how to change the setting should you need to. I found the best way to use the camera glasses was to charge them using the included wall charger and down load the video files using the included card reader.

I experimented with the settings file just to see how it worked. By plugging the USB cable into the glasses and connecting to my desktop computer I was able to edit the settings file easily using a text editor – word, note pad... etc. The settings are easy to understand and modify. Once set up the 1-button on/off switch is all that is needed to operate the camera glasses.

I took them on motorcycle rides, bicycle rides, walks, trips to the supermarket, pretty much everywhere I went. They are very stylish sunglasses and no one noticed that there was a camera in them. I got some candid/natural moments that would never have been filmed with a standard camera. I found that they were very useful while disassembling some equipment that I was in the process of repairing. I wasn’t sure of how one part came off – but – after reviewing the video I was sure I had it right – very useful.

As with any device they have their limitations. Some times you need more than 1 hour of run time. The Eye Of Mine Eye-View 1080HD Eyewear Video Sunglasses offer an extended run time package. This accessory kit comes complete with Extra Capacity Battery Pack, retractable power connector cord to connect the battery pack to the USB port on the glasses for extended run times of as long as 6 hours with the high capacity 32 gig SD card. The Eye Of Mine Eye-View 1080HD Eyewear Video Sunglasses are a fun and very useful product.

UPDATE:

Eye Of Mine Eye-View 1080HD Eyewear Video Sunglasses

The Folks at Eye Of Mine just came out with a larger lens set for the glasses. The new lenses give better coverage for larger faces and improved protection from flying debris.

We use these glasses all the time and the videos are great - the point of view from the bridge of the nose is spot on.

A side by side comparison of the lager lenses.
