What about engine oil? The power plant of your whole existence when your on the road. My fat boy was a 97, I ran amsoil in her motor, trans and primary and she ran like a champ, quiet (except for the V&H big radius duals and a few tweaks) and cool. I'm sold on amsoil, I believe it's a superior over other synthetic oils by far.

Using amsoil in your new or older harley doesn't void your warranty. Tests prove that amsoil will make your motorcycle run quieter, cooler and cause less wear on your engine and it's components.

Ride...Safe

I'm thinking after 16 years might be too late to switch to synthetics for my bike.

You can have it cheap.
You can have it fast.
You can have high quality.
PICK ANY 2....

I started using the HD Syn 3 after the 1000 mile break in. Did you run any other synthetic before the Amsoil? What about temp? My 103inch softail runs either just below or just above 250 depending on ambient temperature, Is that about normal?

I faced the same decisions a few months ago. And the rock-solid, definitive answer which I will now chisel in stone for you is a loud and clear "maybe."

Before I bought Spinner I put a ton of cash into Betty's motor. Considering the replacment costs, I went with synth. Seemed like a very good decision, and I do not regret it. After all, is 100 bucks even in the equation when trying to protect an engine worth +6,000 dollars?

When I first bought Spinner I envisioned a " Vespa scooter" but one with a bar-n-shield. You know, a small bike to run errands, go to the gym, get groceries, etc. I was wrong. These new bikes are head-and-shoulders to what I knew as a boy, and slowly I expanded the uses and the joy-riding. When it was time for tune-ups, oil changes and modifications, I found that the subject of operational heat came up. These bikes also run really scalding.

My mechanic suggested the lubrication. His answer was basically, "Get something wet." Because Spinner is who she is, I'm going to be piling on miles, riding everywhere, exposing the engine to heat, and that means frequent oil changes.

It's not that the oil is going to wear out or stop lubricating, but the intervals for changing it out are more frequent. And frankly the first time I saw him grab garden variety oil and a black bodied filter, I cringed. However, he was right. Evalute your motor, your riding style, your mileage and then talk to your mechanic.

Harley doesn't make their oil. I run and have run Amzoil in all the Harleys pots....Its expensive but its not supplied by the cheapest bidder. I see less wear, cooler running engines, quiter transmission.............."Whats in your oil?" Who makes Syn 3?

I run Harley oil not synthetic oil, engine wear is minimal, I have 206,000 miles on my 2000 flh and run it hard. Rebuild the engine at 137,000 miles and it was still running good, have never had to add a drop of oil. Change my oil and filter at 2500 miles and when I am on a long trip change it at 5000 miles. Have 69,000 miles on the rebuild and going coast to coast in July.

I use Amsoil. All things being equal... I think the key to it is using the right grade of oil and changing the oil in the correct intervals. I think synthetic will reduce wear and make the bike run cooler, but in the grand scheme of things most people will never know the difference.
