I have a 2011 Road Glide Custom that seems to have a recurring problem w/ serial data loss. Bike will run fine for about a week or two then will start running rough & loses power. put on the dealers test board it shows a "serial data loss code. Once re-set the bike runs fine for 1 to 2 weeks and we start all over again. Has anyone else out there had this problem and if so , how did you correct it? I have gone back and forth to the dealer for a year now trying to get this fixed (warranty issue) and the mechanics can't seem to find any cause for this.

Welcome to the forum.

I have not had this problem. I have worked on a buell that has had similar problems. If it were me I would be looking for a short in your wiring to the ecm. Or maybe you need a new ecm, have they replace it? If they haven't been able to fix the problem in a year obviously they don't know what it is. Try another dealer.

Ecm is the brain that runs the bike. This is where the data loss is and could be cased by a bad ecm. I could be wrong but that is where I would start.

I have been told that there is a cable that links everything to the E.C.M. that may be at fault. The mechanic originally thought that the loss was occouring at the speedo. I have Dakota Digital gauges and the mechanic said that when thay run a trace on the system that it leads them to the speedo. I removed it & returned it to Dakota Digital & they sent me a new one but the problem still persists.Personally I think it is the E.C.M. itself but the mechanic assures me that if it was, there would be many other fault code readings along with the data loss code.
Thank you for your response though and if you have any other suggestions I will definately bring them up to the mechanic next time I take the bike in to have it checked out again!

I would put the original gauges back in just to see if it is the Dakota's. Have you tried that? Logic is that if it works then it is the gauges, if not rule that out. Start to rule thing out, get an new ecm, insist on it. If that is not the problem get a new wiring harness. You paid good money for your bike you should enjoy it.

If I had a bike that was new I would insist that they find out what was wrong. Call HD main office and talk to their teck dept. I have done this on several of the bikes that I own. Make some noise tell them you want another bike. One that runs the right way, tell them you been to the dealer how many times and still not fixed! You will get what you want and they will make every effort to fix it. If not go to the next step.

I had a problem that could not be fixed and I got them to take mine back under the lemon law. If it is not fixed by three times you can get your money back. Insist that they fix it or give your money back.

I've heard of the MoCo doing refunds of lemons before, sounds like you got one...
The gauges might be a problem so try switching them back first.

There's a few drawbacks to that return the bike thing. I have more invested in custom accessories and paint on my bike than it cost new. (almost twice as much actualy). Second, yes I have tried putting the stock gauges back in when I sent the Dakota digitals back. I had this same problem occour about a week after the bike was originally purchased while it was completely stock anyway so I know it's not the gauges no matter what the dealers test equipt. says.I may have to try the calling the main office thing though. I will tell them that I want a new E.C.M. first though and see what they say. Once again thank you very much for your input and suggestions lenny 82.
