I just picked up a 2007 Ultra from a dealership and the first day was great. 4 days and now I am experiencing a heavy vibration throughout the motorcycle at speeds above 50 mph. Has anyone ever had a like experience?

You'll need to define 'heavy.'

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but some vibes in my big-twin seem to come and go. Some days she runs mirror smooth. Other days I sit at a stoplight and the mirrors shake so bad I cannot discern the make and model of the car behind me.

If what you feel is a "buzz," then let me welcome you to the world of Harley-Davidson. Some shovels danced around in the frame so bad there were complaints of peoples' feet feeling like they had fallen asleep. Even with my '04 my wife wanted floor boards or air-foil pegs to lessen the thumping she got on the bottom of her feet.

However, if you feel knocking of the motor that surpasses the rubber mounting, or mechanical noise, or bolts shaking themselves loose, now you have a problem. I didn't tighten a single bolt this season on either bike.

If your TC shakes like a 'shovel,' then don't be a 'knucklehead' and 'pan' out a good mechanic before your engine goes 'flat.'

If you think that it isn't normal then take it back to the dealer. I am sure that you have some kind of warranty. At least let them make a note of you coming in and saying there is a problem. It is hard to tell what it could be sitting where I at. Could be anything from a bad motor mount to a unbalanced wheel. Let us know what the results are from your dealer.

Ya' know, the more and more I thought about your suggestion the better I felt about your advice. This has happened before.

In 1973 MoCo had all of the Sportsters called back to their dealers and had two support straps welded into their frames. It has been learned that the rear motor mount was cracking. I was your average garden-variety wrench, set-up boy and wage slave at that dealership, and the head mechanic told me it was common to pull a Sportster motor down during that era and already find the rear mount cracked. My Sportster was part of that recall.

MoCo now hydro-forms some parts of frames. Improvement? But let's be honest, a V-twin shakes, and where there is vibration there is stress and metal fatigue. You're right, the mounts should be checked.
