 Post subject: Clutch issue

Picture one; this is how I have it installed at the moment.
Picture two; this is how it came off on tear down.
Picture three; this is the homemade washer from pic two.
What would be the purpose of it? It shifted and ran fine with it on, but can't find anywhere in the manuals that would suggest this washer be on. Can't ask the original owner.

Might be that someone cut down a diaphragm spring.

Thanks Glider, so does it need to be there for clutch adjustment? Hate to sound like I don't know what I'm doing, but I don't know what I'm doing!!! This is my first clutch install.

Dave, sorry I don't know, what I suggested is that it could be the spring. I cannot determined if it is that. Did you buy a new clutch? If not just put it back the same way you took it out?

does your clutch resemble the one in the diagram?

No it doesn't. Among other things the steel plates don't have teeth, thay have notches in them. It is the original clutch, everything looked good, friction plates showed very little wear. I think this clutch assy probably has less than 1500 miles on it. When I picked up this bike, it had been sitting for 3 years but the previous owner had gone thru everything on a rebuild including converting to belt drive. He might have someone's aftermarket clutch in it. The belt was from Belt's unlimited or something like that and thay did offer a quite clutch also.

It is probably aftermarket with the belt. Nice setup tho. I would try to find out if the clutch has a name on it or the belt. Try Belt's Unlimited maybe you will have some luck there. Then call them on the phone and see if they will get you the install instructions. I can't help you any more then this. Sorry Dave. Hope that you get it figured out.

could be a belt drive limited setup. If it is try calling Orangeburg cycle Orangeburg S.C. That is Bill Furr's shop, he is a top fuel Harley racer and users BDL and is sponser. Picture of part looks like it was made by an owner and not the maufacturer, but the picture is not clear either.

I went looking online found BDL and plenty of pictures. Did not see that plate anywhere, but then didn't see any beeltdrives wirh the tension adjuster either. I don't understand how the clutch would work like that with the clutch rod adjustment nut lock down agaist it. The way I have always seen clutches the spring adjust is set by spacers and or different colored springs for different tensions, then the clutch rod adjustment is made, then cable. Did the clutch work with that plate mounted? Have you tried setting the clutch up without the plate then trying the clutch?.
