I changed handlebars on my 2000 1200 Sportster, and may have pinched the wires in the controls putting them back on. I heard a small pop like a fuse, or breaker tripping when I hit the start button, and after that, nothing happens when you hit the start. All the lights, turn signals, horn, brake lights all work, but it's like the kill switch is off. I opened the left side panel, and pulled out the plastic triangular plastic held in by rubber grommits. All that's there is a circuit breaker (hot voltage at both terminals), and a relay. I did not see any fuses. Is there fuses somewhere inside the plastic piece, or somewhere on the bike? Help!
John

Don't blame me, I voted for the American! 2000 XL1200 Sportster.

if you pinched a wire then you need to remove switch housing and "un"pinch the wire to fix problem.then as long as you got it apart retrace all wires to ensure correct placement.when all is correct then visit your local harley dealer for advice on the popping noise.sounds like something happened...your service manual would be very helpful too... sorry i am not better at electronics. when i changed my handlebars all went better then yours did.
by the way ....what bars did you get and did you go with braided cables(wow they look sharp)?

polkcavediver,
I think that roadkinging has given you the best advice as to how to fix the problem. I think that the popping noise was a result of the bare wire touching the ground. Did it pop a fuse? If it did not then it probably only touched for a second. You need to find that short or it could burn up your wires. The best place to start is where you heard the popping sound. Good luck

I think a biker who pays +20K for a scooter knows where his dealer is. I've never seen a big-twin stripped down at a dry-cleaners.
