Pretty interesting topic considered that the winter is coming and this might be a great project bike...

I think if I fit on one I'd own one.

Workin' on it, RK, workin' on it.

There needs to be a bike "in the middle." I've always wondered why Harley doesn't build a bigger unit construction engine. If not I think you can slug out the Sportster cases to make +1500cc, and with Buell technology there would be plenty to pull bigger guys.

As for the frame, Harley is now hydro-forming tubing. A larger frame is a CAD design away from being a reality.

As for cost, there's an entire market out there that has more than 10K to spend but clearly less than 30K. Look at the metric market for bikes 750cc to 1800cc. They're doing it, and making money everyday. In fact, I have often wondered how much business MoCo is losing to Victory.

with a larger bike the size of the components would be scaled larger... 5 gallon gas tanks would be possible.

Ahhh, the infamous Sportster-Glide. And I would be the first in line.

However, there are other considerations--like the future and EPA numbers. I'd like to believe that with a more modern engine, direct injection and accompanying CPU, a bigger Sportster engine would be easier to modernize than something with roots in 1936.

I have seen Sportsters using shovelhead cylinders to get the inches, along with double plugs and even individual carburetors. And remember, the land-speed record of the era was a Lake City Gargantuan motor that went 265 MPH on the Salt Flats.

And comparing apples to apples, any modification you can do on a big-twin can be done to a Sportster. And yikes, I have the receipts to prove it...

Ya' know, I've been whining about this mythical Sportster for about three years now. I wonder if it's time to build it. The issue for me is the use of modern parts, of which I know squat. After all, I'm going to ride it, not look at it.

My vision has a shovel (or S&S clone) jammed into a smaller frame. I'd like the brick-abrack chromed, but the engine done up in black and bare metal, like the original. Perhaps using a flat side engine. But from there on, I want 'modern.' Like a better ignition and EFI.

Is there a company you guys know about that builds/modifies shovels to look old and run new? Are there frames made that provide suspension but are more compact than those from a dresser? Remember, the Super Glides of that era were just stripped down dressers with the exact same transmission.

I want the overall bike to have the profile of a Sportster (and handle like one) when you first see the bike from a distance.

Oy, is my wife going to be ticked...
