Unless you live in the desert you probably don't need an oil cooler. They do work and can inhibit your engine from warming up to the recommended operating temperature. Some of them have thermostats that open and close the system so you can and maintain operating temp. If you need to get one make sure that you get the one that has a thermostat your engine will run better.

Just an example check it out. Harley-Davidson Touring Premium Oil Cooler Kit 26155-09

Hope this helps

I just had one installed on the Sportster, but I have not ridden the bike yet. As for 'damage,' I doubt it. Even still, I always let my bikes idle until I feel warmth with my bare hand on the rocker box or head. It only takes a minute, and then a slow romp out of the neighborhood to the highway, and trust me, the Sportster is scalding by then.

The idea should be moderate, even heat mandated by the engine temp and oil viscosity. No molasses when it's cold, and no sewing machine oil in Death Valley. Even if I knew what I was doing with oil coolers--and I don't--I had a factory unit installed by a trained mechanic and then run on a dyno with a new download.

In short, I made the best researched decision I could.

oil coolers do help when it's really hot out and if you get stuck in traffic all day.

This is a new one on me. While I have seen oil coolers mounted low on the front down tubs (where it would seem that stones churned up by the front tire would easily hit it) I have never heard/seen of an oil cooler that had to be removed constantly for maintenance.

If that's the case, I'd do some research to find another model for your bike. There has to be numerous manufacturers that build oil coolers, in fact, the model I bought had all of the fasteners, lines cut to the exact length and brackets. My mechanic described the installation as "plug and play."

the kits I've seen have some "wiggle" room maybe you can change the position of the oil cooler to give yourself a little extra space to remove the oil filter.

Like RK said move it around a little so that you can get the oil filter off without removing the cooler.
Post some pics maybe we can give you some ideas.
