 Post subject: 1976 FXE fresh start after 5 years

Any tips on starting bike after 5 years? Got new battery will flush gas and replace, plugs. Any help would be appreciated.

Pull your float bowl, air cleaner and exhaust pipes for nests and critters or remains, after that I would wd-40 the motor with the plugs out, then change the oil and turn the motor over a bit to pump oil through out the motor, put the plugs in turn the fuel on and start it up. Good luck if you hear loud noises shut it down and disassemble . DEERSLAYER

Good advice especially if you hear a noise you don't recognize.

I had to park my bike for some years while I rehabbed my back.

As it sat there the fuel crossover hose got brittle, cracked and leaked fuel in the garage.

By the time I got ready to start it - this is what I went through.

First I changed all the oils - engine, tranny and primary.
MY thought process - once it starts I want to ride it...

Brand new battery.

Cleaned the plugs - looked in the plug hole to see if any debris - I used a small flash light and I could see the tops of the pistons - clear.

I then replaced the crossover hose. Filled 2 gallons of fresh premium fuel in the tank.

Pulled the choke and she popped and burbed and fired up... only to start leaking fuel out of the carb.

The acceleration pump diaphragm in the carb was old and brittle and cracked - leaking fuel. To fix it I tried to get the carb off but it wouldn't budge - I was impatient to ride the bike so I just pulled the bottom of the carb off rebuilt what was accessible and put it all back together. The fuel leak was solved but the bike ran really rough - seems that the old and brittle intake rubber gaskets didn't like being disturbed - they were leaking - so I had to muster the strength to remove the carb... I think I used a big stick...

Once I got all the gaskets to seal and the fuel system not to leak the bike ran pretty rough - I used some stp fuel treatment and the bike ran better - after a few tanks of gas the bike ran normal.

Eventually every piece of rubber in the fuel system failed and needed to be replaced.

If your planning on riding it after you get it running I would replace the tires first.
Rubber has a shelf-life. If your going to sell it tell the buyer how old the tires are.

I forgot - i did the tires when I changed the oils - new rubber!!
