Seems like it maybe, but Buell had nothing to do with this.

C'mon, guys, it's funny. And actually true. Even we say those same things here. For examples, 'back in the day' the best place to find springer parts was at junk yards--people threw them away. Now MoCo sells the same front end for +5K dollars.

And Erik Buell did get screwed. Whether he participated in the phony commercial is immaterial. You can take Buell parts and put them into a Sportster and get a better Sportster. Until we pressure MoCo to actually use innovation, we are going to get stuck with criticism like this. The best way to stop the ribbing is to fix the bikes.

One of my Super Glides had a single leading shoe front brake. After the CB750, we got hydraulic discs. Do you think MoCo would have made the change without that condition?

I didn't do it. I have seen that same commercial in years past. It is funny.

Saying soft tail technology is the same as knuckle technology is not true or remotely accurate. The knuckle was a rigid and the softail has a shock underneath so the technology is infinitely much improved since the knuckle and worth the money. The modern springer front ends are equally more technologically advanced then the knuckles' springer. In as much as the MOCO companies delineation of same model distinctions there are good reasons for it. The do rag etc.... is just one of many abominations the new riders of today brings to the life style. It has become the quientessential biker holloween costume.

Commercial was probably made by a bunch of small penised metric riders who cruise up and down the blvd basically invisible unless they pop wheelies or crash in there tank top, flip flops and shorts.

Eric Buell did not get screwed. He was simply unfortunate collateral damage when the economy tanked. When the economy tanked HD did what it had to do to survive...dumping Buell and Aprilla. All the bike shops around here are gone. Even mighty Honda..gone! Shops that were here for decades...gone! Pre 2007 there were Honda,Suzuki,Kawasaki,Yamaha and Harley shops here. Fast forward thru the economy dump only HD remains. Why? Because they do what they got to do to keep the product viable and thriving. Having Buell and Aprilla was similar to things many of us did before the economy took a dump with what they called "expendable" income. Who has that any more? Not me. HD stock dropped to 7$ or so a share during that economic slump. I bought a huge shit load because I know. Guess what it rose to and where it is now, lol. One didn't need to be a stock market genius.. only had to know that Harleys spike in the summer, peak in the fall with the new line up of next years models and then flat line in the winter. Seems to fit with buy low and sell high...I'm just saying.

While I agree with you on the final outcome regarding Erik Buell, you know that trying to save distressed businesses was my 'adult job.'

You can make 'correct' decisions, but the old adage of being 'cruel to be kind' is slim comfort to the guys on the short end of the stick. And frankly, MoCo wasn't that warm to him even when he was riding the wave of success.

MoCo never really gave him much corporate support other than sometimes including the word 'Buell' on their street signage. My shop is still known as "Capital City Harley-Davidson and Buell," but never had more than two or three bikes and a small section of a pegboard wall for parts. Yet, it was common to see Buells in the parking lot, in the service writing bay or on the highway. Our Harley "riders' edge" program still uses the Buell Blast.

The 'fact' is that Buell might have been the redheaaded stepchild for Harley, and perhaps did not return a superior investment, but the handling of the matter was terse and horrid. About two years ago (correct me here) I believe that S&S and MoCo were in litigation with each other, but still jointly had products together in development.

While corporations might sue each other dispassionately while making money, you can wreck a man's business for not making enough money. It's a valid corporate ideology. It sucks, but it's valid. Frankly, I'm thinking about Buell parts for my current Sportster. After all, I have to make dispassionate decisions, myself.
