I have a 1983 FLHS that I've had since new.

Here is my '78 fxs. 93" kit from SnS and a LSR pipe from RBRacing.
It does get up and go, especially when it comes on the cam about 3,500rpm.
I bought it in 26 boxes from a friend of a friend. Took a winter to assemble and 2 years to get it right.
The foot clutch / jockey shift did take some getting used to. Sure is a conversation starter.

I love flat side shovels (which I believe covers the '67 model.) I had a cone-shovel, and a FXE Super Glide, but I always wanted a flat-side, and the '65 Franken model.

Hello Shovelhead owners. I was hoping to get some information from people who own them. Since you all own them, my question is how dependable are these models? I'm thinking of buying a Shovelhead as they are fairly cheap to purchase compared to the newer models. I have a chance to get a 2001 Far Boy, but I want to explore all options before I make my decision.

Well, just go into this with your eyes wide open. I owned two cone shovels. One was actually an AMF, and a real mistake.

The only good thing about AMF was that they initiated the next evolution of big twins. Most of us shovel owners from that era had to do a lot of tricks to get more horses. And I mean inches and cams. Many of us did not know that a more aggressive oil pumping system was needed, as well.

A fellow wrench I worked with at Decker's HD bought an old MoCo dyno mule shovel in a box. He literally took it apart and threw away all of the internal parts. A fellow club member has a custom shop here in Madison and wanted to buid up a shovel--to get any major gains he had to rebuild it as a 92-inch.

The performance really was all over the map. Some shovels were pretty wheezy and made only 45 BHP. Some could be tuned and cammed to make 65 BHP. All had torque, but no more or less than pans.

As a 'boomer, "my engine" is a shovel. In reality, it's more a matter of nostalgia than performance. I spent a ton of money to make those bikes produce for what I bought from showroom floor now.
