hey guys,,im new to the forum.i have a 86' softail,completly custom from the ground up.fenders and tanks are aftermarket.it has s&s heads, agressive cam,s&s carb,dyna ecu,custom alluminum rims,,and a bunch of oter goodies..when i put her away for the winter she was runnin like a top.but when i rolled her out the other day to start her up,,it cranked over and ran for a couple seconds with the choke fully opened and me giving it a little gas..but it backfired a couple times and shutdown..then i heard a gurgglingsound a realized oil was coming out of the puke tube..i didnt have the time to stay and figure it out..so i figured i'd ask you guys before i went to mess with it.any advice is appreciated..thanks

make sure the petcock is pointing in the right direction
make sure your gas is still good
check your connections

yeah roadking..i know that the petcock is in right and was turned on..i was thinkin the same thing about the gas..had it stored with with less than a half tank and never got around to putting some stabil in it and topping it off the gas,,not to mention draining the lines..my fault..im going to drain all the lines and tank tomorrow and fill it up with some fresh gas..keep you posted..thanks for the help

if its all harley take it to a place that sales onley harleys and works on them and have them fix it

Just guessing by this time you've figured it out and started ridin'. However, if it's like some of my work it could be laying there for a year and not get finished. So, risking you have not yet found it, and the replies on here are just guessers and don't seem to know what's going on. (not to put them down, but read their replies). What you done was let it sit too long and all the oil drained down, on firing it up the pump is choked and all it can do is blow it out.
Pull the plugs, drain the oil, replace the NEW plugs, NEW Oil and filter. (because the oil left in it collects moisture while sitting and mixes it with the metal parts to ruin a good engine on crank up. Before starting it, put a teaspoonful of fresh oil in the plug holes and with plugs out and throttle open, crank it over to coat the rings and walls.
Install plugs with above stated new oil & filter and it should start up with no problem. One last bit of advice....NEVER let your ride sit all winter without running it to operating temp at leasdte once a week and that will keep it in great shape for riding season and won't give the oil time to drain. Running the engine every week will also draw a small amount of moisture so before actually riding it, change everything to be sure.
