So i just bought a 94 Sportster XL1200 and when i got home i knew i need the battery change but i also heard that it might be my stator, So im pretty handy with a wrench, so yesterday i took apart the carb and i noticed that the vacuum piston was old as well as the velocity piston was bent any advice i can get from all of you harley lovers out there would be awesome. Yeah its pricey but you'll love it. I reccomend the Super B over the Super E because I think the Super E is harder to dial in then the Super B. I've had both and prefer the Super B over the Super E for the reasons I mentioned.

And S&S have great service after the sale. About 13-15 years after having my S&S I took it off the bike, it was dirty nasty and just lacking. I called S&S they gave me a customer ID number anbd told me to send them my carb. I did and for under 100$ they cleaned and refurbed the carb. It came back brand new. Still have it now. Love S&S.

thanks for the advice brother.... do you have any advice about the battery situation because all my lights turn on when the key is on and so i was wondering if it was the stator ?

All the lights will go on when the key is turned on. It is the way they are built now they are running lights. If that is not the issue then you need to be more specific. Is the battery charging? Are you having trouble starting the engine?

Lenny, I took the battery out and got it checked out and it has full charge. Im having trouble trying to start it, could it be a the stator i dont know just need some expertise advice.

To test if you are getting fire to the plugs pull one of the plug wires off and put a screw driver in it and see if it will arc on the head when you crank it over. If it does, then you are at least getting some fire to the plugs. Check the plugs and see if they are corroded. Are you gettting gas to the motor? Is the fuel filter plugged? YOu mentioned the carb was having issues, did you get it right?

That's my suggestion to start. I think it will run even if the stator is bad, but I am not well read on that model.

Thanks kickstand i will try the plug situation and see if im getting arc on it, but he situation with the carb is the velocity pin is bent i dont know if that will have anything to do with it.

just another taught when i do try to crank it over sometime it gives me a clicking noise and other times no. more clicking noise when i dont have jump on it.

I think that is a good start you will need to narrow it down so we can pinpoint the problem.



That is your battery either it has a weak charge or not the right battery for your bike. It can also be the connections are not tight. The starter does not have enough juice to turn the engine over.

Have you ever heard it run?

Yeah Lenny I heard it run i test drove it before i bought but when i got it home it did not wanna crank over, i pulled the battery out and like i said it has a a full charge. Im gonna try the spark plug tip and see if they are getting a spark with the screwdriver and just keeping trouble shooting it. Will post either way if it is or is not the plugs, Thanks guys !!
