I think it is time you bring it to a harely mechanic, if you were sure something was wrong when it locked up in 3rd maybe you could tackle it but with questions like that you should bring it to someone that knows

ok so now that i have got it running, my question is this, is it normal for the shifter to lock up at third gear ?

NO- it's not - BUT I have a feeling you already knew that - LOL

So what happened? you were riding and going up through the gears and got it into 3rd and then what?

Make sure you get the clutch all the way in to shift.

You can have it cheap.
You can have it fast.
You can have high quality.

You got to give me more when you tell me whats wrong...
Sounds like:
the shifter is wedged, is the linkage from the shifter straight, tight, and adjusted correctly? or should I ask - have you messed with it yet? - if not - and it needs an adjustment you are a little over your head without a "shop manual". A shop manual is about 40 bucks - and covers every nut and bolt on your bike.
IF- you are seriously going to start working on this machine - and - you expect it to perform safely - either you make sure you do every thing by the book -OR- take it in and get it done by a pro.
As for the shifter-
by now you either only have 3 gears - or its stuck in 3rd - I don't know cause you didn't tell me.
if you only have 3 gears - something broke - new tranny upgrade in your future -or- rebuild, cheaper.
Keep me posted - I'm living la vida loco vicariously through you. :icon_bang:

You'll be much better off. They have all the experience, diagnostic tools and when it comes to 2 wheels and your well being you don't want to screw around.

If you have an interest in self maintanence, buy the factory shop manual and start reading it. After market ones are better then nothing but I think given the choice the MOCO shop manual, while more expensive (because its worth it), is by far hands down the best. Start slow. Start with oil/filter/plug changes. But remember somewhere somehow theres a modicum of computerization involved. I basically jumped from a 1983 Harley with minimum technology(electronic ignition but carbed) to 1998/2001/2012 where its all for the most part CPU(EFI,downloads and CPU air gas combo's). I fortunately have the money to always let the shop do most everything. I don't get caught up in you're not a man if you don't fix your own bike and neither should you... not when your safety is at stake. Or start divesting time into understanding how the CPU stuff work with your bike, many have self taught.

Good idea at this point.
Look, let them get it running right, dialed in.
After that you get the right books - they have the answers - I have the books - I learned the answers over a couple decades of ownership - you have to be patient.
Enjoy it and ride the wheels off it.
Keep us all posted - we really do want you to enjoy your bike safely.
