If one bike has 3.3 gallons total and the rider gets about 150 miles per tank and the 48 has 2.1 the the rider gets about 100 miles per tank than seems pretty equal to me. Smaller tank - less total miles - both bikes seem to be getting about the same miles per gallon.

One European Sportster forum posted that a 2.1 peanut tank could get 132KLM before it ran dry--that's 89 miles.

The problem here is that like most vehicles the harder you twist the teat the faster it gulps fuel. For me, the idea of "no reserve" on an EFI motor is the deal breaker. At least on a big twin there's a row of LED lights that go from blue or green to yellow and then red. On Spinner there's only a bright little gas-pump icon that lights up. The next thing is total silence followed by intense pushing of scalding hot Milwaukee iron...

I go farther than that for a beer sometimes and no there wasn't a gas station....
I guess both the bike and the rider would go thirsty on that run.

So did I in a former *ahem* previous life. Even farther for a damsel.

I figure it this way. Sportsters have always been Sportsters. The 2.1 peanut has been their fuel-cell since about 1957. Look, I'm not tickled about pulling over so much, but then, it didn't seem to bother me as a twenty-something just grateful to be cruisin' around.

I looked at a Nightster a few weeks ago. I sat on one, looked down at the 3.3 gallon tank and thought it looked like a bloated banana. It resembles a real-deal peanut only from the sidewalk, and it better be a distant sidewalk, at that.

In the end I think I have to apply 1970s procedures in riding Spinner. I make a list of gas stations and the times they are open, carry a lot of singles and quarters and ride accordingly. And in so doing I out-distance every Electra Glide I know...

As an "Electra Glide" rider I resemble that remark.. :icon_thumbsup:

That's ok, I'd keep a can on my rack for ya brother that way we all get the beer/gas/grass/ass!!

LOL. Spinner and I cut it a little close today.

It was hot here in Dane County, but clear and beautiful. I rode Spinner to the gym, and then decided to swing by the dealership and find out how the festivities were shaping up. We are having the "Thunder Run" charity ride this weekend.

Things weren't rolling there yet, so I finished my coffee and nosed out onto the slab. My thoughts started to wonder, one off ramp passed, and then another, and then another...

Next thing I know I'm six miles away from the nearest ramp where I know there's fuel and it's a turn I have to make! I coasted into the pump island, and a cute little girl clerk took all of my quarters.

Now, you'd think I'd learn better, but 'no.' Oh, I went home, fed the wolf-pack their favorite "postman du jour" midday repast, and I even was a good husband and did a load of laundry. However, I had all of this gasoline, the weather was still great, a client dropped off far too much money, bada bing, bada boom, and I'm back out onto the slab.

Sure enough, I had to circle back to my home area gas station! Okay, lesson learned--sort of. But the weather was holding, I needed more coffee, and I got up on the slab again to the dealership...

Fortunately sanity prevailed, and as Spinner cooled for buffing, I watched 'Troy' and ate something. It's just short of midnight now, still warm outside, and I do have some remaining gas money, but yikes, no one is lucky four times in one day!

I'm at the magic point with Spinner's engine. Broke-in enough for stellar performance and tight enough so that a complete rebuild is miles away. I just turned over 7,400 miles. At 50 miles a per spin, that's quite a lot for a local scooter. The service writer told me I out-distance most Electra-Glides.

In fact, my wrench is watching tire wear!

I'm not thrilled with the slim choices for fuel tanks, but it might become moot. I'm destroying the stock shocks, I'm pushing the tires to death, and I hate the crappy cheap spoked wheels the bike came with. I told the wrench that if the tire goes he should change-out the wheel, as well. I think the winter build will change-out the shocks just in case Spinner takes on The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge...

Oh, she might, but this morning I got up and yesterday's gym muscles were screaming! Sturgis? Oy, I'll be lucky to make the west side of Madison today! If there wasn't free coffee at the dealership I might not go south today, either... :icon_swoon:

Wow dude, you need to get out and ride some more,I do that many miles in 2 months..and I get about 64 to 66 miles before my fuel lite comes on

At 45 miles, I just didn't want to be bothered with getting off, so I passed up an off-ramp. The next one was a bit of a ways off, so I decided to circle there. I figured if I could get back to Hwy 151 I'd decide on a plan then.

Now my record before the warning light is 57.3, so I was a bit surprised when I passed 57 miles--and the 151 turn off--with no light. So, now it's a game! I kept on the slab. The next off-ramp was a big sweeper to old Hwy 30, so I decided that would be the place to exit. However, I still was going strong, no pops or wheezes when I hit Stoughton Road. I could re-join Hwy 151 going through town, so I turned there.

I did all of the tricks. I stayed in the tallest gear I could, I gauged stoplights and stayed moving. I granny-shifted out onto the highway, always poiting towards my home gas station.

I got to 60.7 when the light flipped on! A new record!

However, I was still a ways out from the station. I knew that I had pushed a head-wind on the slab, with many miles over 70 MPH. While you cannot drain an EFI tank, even if I could that's only 85 miles per tank, at best. You sure don't want to ever go beyond 70 miles unless you're wearing comfortable shoes for pushing a dead bike. But have no fear, I floated into the station at 66.3 miles. Both the longest trip to a warning light, and longest span without a fill.

Oh yes, I had a blast, and that's all that counts. Kind of makes Black Betty feel like a Gold Wing!

thats wierd,, I get at least 64 to 66 miles before my lite comes on..and I am cranking it most of the time
