I just purchased my first HD, a 2000 Wide Glide in showroom condition w/ only 10K miles. It's a beautiful bike, but it did not have a windshield, so I picked one up. The shield fits nicely on the existing hardware (quick release) and looks great. However, it is about 3-4 inches too tall, as I do not like looking through the glass as I ride. Has anyone ever cut his shield down to fit. I would like to do this but don't particularly care to ruin a brand new windshield. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I know the obvious question is, "Hey, dumbass, why don't you just get a shorter one?" The answer is that there is not a great selection for the quick release shield that fits the 00 hardware, and it was only $219. compared to the $400.+ for the newer ones.

they can be cut. i know it has been done, but i also know a lot of them get broke. just take it off and leave it in garadge unless you are going distance or learn to look through the windshield. first big rain you get in you will be damn glad you have the tall one... you could always just sit on a phone book. that would make it easier to see over the thing!

I'll give $25 for it before you cut it, cause unless you have the correct tool for that, you are going to F it up.

You can cut them with a router, you have to use a guide and protect the surface of the plexi from the bottom of the tool or it will scratch it badly. wax paper works well.

I can't look through the windshield it never worked for me so I just "peek" over the top and get the best of both worlds. So, I completely understand where you are at by not being able to sit below that level.

IMHO:
On your current windshield, Use an erasable marker to find the correct height of the edge you need, then measure from that mark, the size and then buy the correct one. My logic, you'll still have the full size one and you'll also have the one you would have had to buy after you "didn't get the desired results" on the full size one.

It was a bit unnerving, cutting up a perfectly good windshield right out of the box, but I did it. It came out looking like it just came from the factory. Taped both sides of the shield, measured twice, checked everything again, used a medium tooth jig saw blade and went at it. Sanded using increasingly fine paper, cleaned it up and then admired the work. Looks and works just great.
