Here is the question. I have a 2006 FXDL/I and completed Stage 1 mods: installed K&N High Flow Air Filter Kit and V&H Big Shot Staggered Exhaust (with V&H Baffles installed), engine is completely stock other wise. Which process would you choose as "best" way to adjust EFI for most reliable operation and performance (to include fuel mileage) to support Stage 1 upgrade:
1. Go to HD and do factory "flash"/software upgrade of ECM for Stage 1, or
2. Install aftermarket EFI controller (piggy back type) which alters the sensor signal for standard factory ECU to providing a different amount of fuel. Example would be Doebeck TFI.
I don't plan on doing any other engine mods.
apprecaite your thoughts.

I have used the factory flash on two bikes that I have had and still have one with the factory part. I do like them better then aftermarket. The factory unit is not for getting good gas mileage it is set-up for the best possible all around performance for that engine with the stage 1 kit. As far as I know you cannot adjust the settings.

The aftermarket unit you will have to dyno and set up all the different settings. This is the way to go if you want to totally customize your engine ie. best miles per gallon, highest horse power. I do think that this is over kill for what you are doing. If you had put hotter cams in or changed displacement then this is the way to go. If cost is the issue the factory unit is less money and trouble. If you go the factory way PM me and I will give you some special info on what to do.

+1 on the factory, for your mods you did and long range plan.

You can have it cheap.
You can have it fast.
You can have high quality.
PICK ANY 2....
