My 2005 FXDWG is getting about 33 to 35 MPG. It should be getting about 40. The bike runs well. I think it is stock except for a stage 1 upgrade. I cleaned the K&N filter, but it didn't help. I may change the fluids and see if that helps.

Any ideas what may be causing it?

Just a thought try some fuel injection cleaner or carb cleaner in your fuel tank. That may help clean out anything that might be sticking. What kind of gas do you use? I use only good quality gas, premium. Everything that I ride is high compression. And make sure that your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure.

Hope that this fixes your problem. good luck!

Lenny covered some important ones:
Tire inflation is one of the tops.
How about spark plugs - check the gap or replace.
Don't forget the most important variable: How hard and often you crank that throttle...
Trying to get it into a higher gear sooner, less revolutions means less gas burnt.

God's honest truth:
I get better gas mileage riding 2 up... know why????
Cause I "BEHAVE" when she's on the back. Seriously, I get around 42+ mpg with and 38 solo :icon_mrgreen:

I just put new tires on a couple months ago, they seem to give me a bump up also.
about 5% - 2 miles/gallon on 40mpg. With my old tires (best eco) I was at: 34city/ 40hwy.

BEST MILEAGE I ever got:
50+ mpg hwy - cheating: drafting semi's - not recommended. :icon_whee:

Hey Kickstand...yeah thats low..almost like he's got an entry level cam like a SE204? If not maybe some EFI cleaner run thru a tank or2 o clean up the injectors?

If the bike was not tuned after stage I upgrade that could cause a drop
Or it was tuned and set to run rich. If you bought the bike from a dealer they should have some record of it

I always use Supreme fuel & the tires are at the proper inflation. Now I could use some carb cleaner maybe, but the bike runs outstanding. I will put some in it anyway, it's can't hurt.

The motor runs real well, but it does have about 15k miles on it now and I wonder if the plugs have been changed. I will check them out and see. I ride it the same as my Heritage as far as pushing it. On the heritage when I ride 80+ I get 36-38 MPG… when I ride 60-70 I get 40-42. I have noticed lately the heritage MPG has dropped, but that was before I recharged the air cleaner. Not sure now. 50 MPG, now that is awesome.

Drafting semi’s… now that is a dedicated saver lol.

The carb cleaner is a good idea, I will try that. My heritage’s performance was better than some of the bikes with bigger engines that I test drove, but the Wideglide’s performance is noticeably better than the Heritage. It could all be in my head, but that is how I perceive it. The sales guy that sold me the bike said he didn’t know it had a security system on the bike… nor the LED light effects… what else did they miss on the appraisal?

I wondered that as well. It is carbureted, so that would be an easy fix. I just don’t see any obvious signs of it running rich. How would I test that?

To test for burn - rich/lean pull spark plugs and see what color they are.
dry tan = normal burn
wet/carbon build up = too rich
white flakey/dry = too lean

check gap while you got them out.

I'm not sure howw stage I is defined on a carburated bike
High flow air cleaner and bigger jets? More air more fuel less mpg.
My bike is electronic. Dealer told me it had a stage I download and a high flow air filter, the bike also has aftermarket exhaust.
Bike gets about 35 mpg
I,m clueless about most things mechanical these days. My wife says I,m clueless about everything. Beat ya'll to it.
My advice is if it runs good ride it. If it's sluggish I would take it in and pay for a tune.

I agree, but my Heritage has the a stage one and it get's 40 on average. I'm just trying to figure out why, that is a significant difference.

Could be different gearing.
You're getting the same mileage on your heritage as I get on my RK. I know the gearing is different on my bike vs. the wide glide - is it enough to change the mileage that much? I don't know...
