The needle on the fuel gauge of my 2001 Ultra (fuel injected) bounces like crazy while cruising. It stops when I accelerate and when the tank is completely full. Any ideas of what the problem is?

Thanks in advance.

Hey comar,

My 2001 Ultra use to do that when it got past the 1/2 point. I figured 1)the EFI stuff is in the tank 2) when it got low the obtrusion of the EFI stuff caused the fuel to slosh around a little more then usual, hence causing the fuel needle to bounce around. The 2001 is only 5 gallon tank and actually I figured less being the EFI stuff was in there too. My 2001 also had a204 cam and stage II download so I was only getting maybe 35-37 mpg.

I recently purchased a 2012 Ultra and OMG brother!!! Its all that and a bag of chips.

Here's an idea...
there may be a bad connection on the sending unit, the float is attached to a reastat, as the gas level goes down the pickup connections may have corrosion or the like causing them to "bounce". the connection on the full tank is still clean/good. Full tank and acceleration may be the same...
I'd pull the sending unit out and bench test it to start.
Hope it helps.

Hey RoadKing,

Something went haywire with my old user name (comar1) so I had to change it and re-register. Thanks for your advise on the re-o-stat. I haven't been home long enough to check that out. It sounds like it could be the problem since it never used to bounce. I'll let you know when I get it figured out.
Thanks,
showmarv

Just to let you know, my needle bounces with less than a half tank and that's normal because the gas is sloshing around in the tank. As soon as I come to a stop or stay in a consistent position it settles down and reads accurately. If its dropping to zero and bouncing back to a reading it would be a bad connection.
