I am 63 years old in good shape 5'9 190 lbs. I am currently riding a 01 ultra classic that fits me like a glove. I go on one long ride a year and maybe 2 or 3 shorter runs. Dont ride much around town but do some especially with patriot guard. Here is my question. Will the 09 and newer ultra with the changes provide a better ride, handling, etc. I am also looking at the new switchback and (gulp) a bmw 1200rt. My thinking is that I am getting a little older and what to have every edge I can if I am going to keep riding. Want the best handling safest machine I can get. I can ride around 500 miles a day on what I have got and still be civil that night at dinner so whatever I get is going to have to be as comfortable as my 01 ultra. However, it is loud and has a backfiring problem on decel which I have been unable to fix. I can get around the twisties but would like to have something that would be a little easier to handle. I know the switchback may be the answer but for the same money I can get a used ultra with low miles or the bmw. So, what do you think? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 2001 Ultra and I think you should consider keeping yours, especially if you got it dialed in. The new fly by wire throttle has been causing issues. The newer frame changes do make the frame better but you can add a stabilizer to your 2001 and achieve the same thing:

https://eglidegoodies.com/id229.html

The newer bikes are tuned hotter from the factory. That recquires down loads to cool down

As far as the back firing that might be the ethanol in the gas. Start adding a splash of gas stabiler and use 89 octane. There is this one particular brand of stabililizer that I use, its better then the rest and its called star tron. It can be found in the marine section of walmarts, most auto stored have it. You can't over dose your gas if you over fill with it. On my 2001 I was having poor acceleration and popping as well issues decelerating. I tried everything I could with 2 dealers to fix it with no fix. Finally an old timer mechanic reccomended using 89 octane with Start tron gas stabilizer...problem gone. I have recommended it to others who even though using other stabilizers found this to be the cure. Its worth a try.

As far as your loud...new pipes might be in order. Can't blame you on the Switchback...nice looking dignified and heavy bike. It only has a few amenities of the Ultra, as you know. But you only take one long ride a year..maybe the Switchbacks the way to go?

How about a pictutre of the old 2001. Heres mine

First thing is an attitude adjustment. You're 63, not dead. I'm about the same age.

Many times I meet a guy who not only modifies his bike, but modifies his life. He'll say something like, "Well, I never liked itchy sweaters, but then, I'm getting older..."

Heck, Sonny Barger is older than both of us and had his malignant voice box removed.

I believe that motorcycles have a distinct difference from cars or even bicycles. A Harley has a personal attachment, many guys name their bikes. If height is a problem, buy shorter shocks. But you got into motorcycling for a reason, and I believe that reason never really dies.

For example, I know that Harley makes some form of hydraulic assist that makes pulling the clutch lever easier. Here's a thought--go to the gym or keep a wad of that medical putty next to your end table. You know the one with your TV remote on it. Keep squeezing the putty until you can crack open a walnut out of sheer spite.

I had/have a touch of asthma. Lots of guys go to band camp, get fat, and fear stairs. I took the position that while I might have asthma, asthma doesn't have me.

Ride your bike. Look at a pretty girl. Get your nose broken fighting for a good cause. Your motorcycle will look a lot differently to you.

In my opinion, the bike that fits you like a glove is the one you should keep. Fixing a bike you have history with and are familiar with is probably still your best option. The problems you stated are minimal at best. Take a few bucks and get some new grips and what ever might be a little worn, you'll be surprised at how the simple things can give you a "new" feel. As for the handling do some research on different tires and try different settings on the suspension. Practicing tight maneuvers in a deserted parking lot will keep your skills sharp and make handling the bike easier. Most important have fun.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I like what everyone is saying and was moving in that direction as well. I agree "if it aint broke, dont fix it" My old ultra has gone through some tough miles with me. We have gone right down the middle of the strip in vegas and over the top of the rockies at Estes Park Colorado. I just need to man up and raise my game. The motor will do whatever I am skilled enough to do. Am going to look into suspension system and tires. Thanks for the info.
Hey Tourist I get what you are saying.
There is a poem by Dylan Thomas that I try to live by.
Do not go gentle into that goodnight
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
The grim reaper will come for me someday but when he does, he better bring his lunch.
Stay safe and thanks again

No prob. Lots of 'old school' fudds here. Every time we watch "The Wizard of Oz" and Dorothy oils up the Tin Man, I get crap from my wife. "Gee, I wonder if that works with olive oil..."

Actually, I'm surprised all of the time. As a boy I remember 60 year old men congregate at the barber shop where my dad took us. Yikes, they looked old and bent! But as I've stated, the most dangerous man I knew was 64.

I've found that it's all mental. If you like that bike of yours, ride it. Ride it into the ground. That, and I'm a reseller, I can get Ben Gay in case lot prices.
