Thanks for the responses! It's been helpful. I have good insurance but I'll have more piece of mind with a security system as well.
Totally agree.... If some one gets to close its starts to chirp. So people don't just go up and sit on the bike, I've seen that happen before. Also if they are thinking about doing something to the bike once it starts chirping it draws attention to the bike from bystanders. Also if the alarm does go off the key fob starts to chime and vibrate in your pocket. So you might get a chance to catch someone in the act of doing something and let them see just how you really feel about it.
Maybe maybe not. I just wouldn't go into the alarm proposition thinking thats the end all, cover all the bases solution to possible theft. A long time friend who has since moved out to SF,CA and is more of a RUB had just purchased a cherried out top dollar custom RK with a state of the art alarm system/key fob deal. Long story short he frequented a local watering hole where 1% and other club types were known to hang out but also the place to be for all things cool bikers in the bay area as he understood it. Went in to have a beer or 2 one time, came out, bike was gone, and no one saw nothing. Alarm didn't do squat but his insurance financially covered the damage.
I agree that alarms are a helpful addition to theft protection and can only help the cause. If it means that much to you always try to park your bike where you can see it.
When I've been lucky enough to be on the road over night I have always been able to park it at the hotel entrance, under the awning and right where the front desk can see it or in a parking spot under my window.
