My bike is a 1994 - the first year they made a Road King.
I didn't know they changed the suspension - the air suspension on my bike is one of the reasons I love it so much. I don't know about the new bikes but my bike was high quality the whole way. Some stuff wore out but I broke mostly everything I had to repair. The bikes currently at the dealer look great but I haven't ridden them like I own them.

Stock parts / oem stuff is high quality. But the most important thing you can do is research before you buy.
The best way is to actually ride someones bike with the upgrades in place then you can compare in a more reliable way.

You all have realy good advice, Don't want to get off topic to much but think we all agree to stay OEM on all things motor wise. The 1 inch lower rear air shocks that came on the bike from Harley are just OK and with me and the wife, saddle bags and T bag loaded i'm at 18 psi and good to go but anything less is difficult to manage. I think the big issue is the 1 inch lower gets my feet flat on the ground which is great when you own a 900lb bike but does decrease suspension travel. The 07 HD Touring Service Manual even has 2 seperate charts for Rear air shock pressures, 1 for "All Models Except FLHRS, FLHX-Standard Shocks" and the 2nd "FLHRS, FLHX Only Low Profile Shocks" the 2nd which i9s what I fall under with my FLHRS requires more psi for the same rider weight ratiing to make up for less suspension travel which is making a stiffer ride. So I am goping to have to find something other than OEM

Yeah - my bike has the highest seat height of any year RK. The suspension travel is max and max comfort.
The saddle is huge and really padded - still use the stock -OEM - its getting worn on the edges though.

I can understand your problem - 18psi on the suspension is rock hard. I can only agree that you're going to have to do something to change that. Do the shocks you're interested in change the suspension travel to increase it? IF not - you might not be doing anything more than changing shocks... I can tell you from my personal riding experiences - the reason my bike rides like a cloud is because it goes so far up and down. I just don't know if the engineers at HD designed the lower suspension to be raised, and thats what is going to make the bike ride softer with out bottoming out all the time.

Your right RK, I'm kinda in a pickle with this factory lowered supension. Have not figured out what I'm going to do yet, more travel is the key, maybe a gas shock will ride softer? I'm still looking for answers and need to do more research. Sure don't want to shell out more $$ for same thing in another package, I did buy a mustang seat a year ago for long trips and it did help some but sits me up higher and more forward than I really like. I think all the new bikes are using gas shocks, I'll have to call the HD Service desk in the am and see what they say

No Nothing yet, Progressive had what the call ultra touring shocks that were 1 inch shorter with the same travel as regular but were for years 08 & 09 I'm sure there is something out there but for now Im still looking

It,s going to have to be Progressives 944s or 940s The more I read about the original air shocks as to how temperature and elevation changes the air presseure in the shock. I'm sure it was a good idea at first but you are going to need good ol USA Made Nitrogen shocks if you are going to do any traveling at all in this wonderful country of ours with it's Mountains, Plains and Deserts. and we really do live in the best country, if for now other reason than we know how to rebuild a 2 barrel carb on 72 Ford Bronco with no mechanicl training other than just the will to get it done yourself. Ive been all over Europe, from Denmark to Turkey, Israel, Greece, Spain, Germany,France,Britian, Scotland,Holland,Belgium,Italy,Portugal,Luxumborg, Sweden, Austria, and I'm sure a few I am forgetting. All good people for the most part, you know, trying to live right, feed their kids, provide a roof, Some might consider them to be civilized and closest to our morales. But there is nothing like being in this great country. Lets keep it that way!!!!! Turn off the news it's all crap with a purpose.
